Wade Shares Wealth: Thanksgiving Is Every Day For Rookie Who Gives 10 Percent Of Pay To Help Others.

When Dwyane Wade takes the court for the Heat, he is playing not only for coach Stan Van Gundy and his teammates, but also for the less fortunate in his Chicago hometown.
While the points, assists and rebounds offer hope of better tomorrows for the struggling franchise, just by being in the NBA, the 6-foot-4 point guard is enriching the future of lifelong friends, neighbors and fellow Christians.
For the 21-year-old husband and father, Thanksgiving arrives not only today, but every day. The giving is year-round.
"Ten percent," he said, in his quiet, unassuming voice, as he leaned forward to tie his sneakers. "It goes with the territory of me getting blessed by being able to come into the NBA. Now, I can bless other people and I can bless other things that I've always wanted to."
As the fifth selection in last June's NBA draft, Wade will earn $2.6 million this season. Ten percent of that is forwarded to the Blood, Water and the Spirit Ministry in Chicago's Southside.
Without question. Without reservation. Without second thought.
"I've been blessed since I was a kid," he said, discussing the matter only because it was raised by another. "It's something that's close to my heart and something I wanted to do."
To Wade, childhood sweetheart Siohvaughn and 18-month-old son Zaire, the words of Malachi 3:8-11 have become words to live by: "Try me, the Lord said. Give me a tenth of what you have and see if I do not flood you with an abundant return."
Long before his arrival in the NBA, Wade offered his share.
"Dwyane's family, they tithe. We all tithe," said Darrell Gibson, pastor of the non-denominational ministry. "He was a tither before he became part of the NBA. The amount was different then, but the sacrifice is the same."
