Conquering the Root of Strongholds by Jim Logan

Does something have a hold upon an area of your life that you have been trying to stop? Jim Logan shares that the Bible call’s those “strongholds,” and all of us have these strongholds within our lives, but reveals how God gives us the power to conquer them.

In the Christian faith, strongholds are often understood as deeply entrenched patterns of thought, behavior, or spiritual influences that keep individuals from fully living out their faith. These can be sins, negative thoughts, emotional wounds, or even demonic influences that act as barriers to spiritual growth and effectiveness. Conquering these strongholds is a pivotal aspect of spiritual warfare and personal spiritual growth. This article explores strategies to identify and overcome the roots of these strongholds, empowering believers to live more freely in their Christian walk.

Understanding the Nature of Strongholds

A stronghold, in biblical terms, refers to anything that has a ‘strong hold’ over a person’s life. This could be an addiction, unforgiveness, fear, or any persistent sin pattern. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 highlights the nature of spiritual warfare and the importance of tearing down strongholds through divine power:

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

Identifying the Root Causes

The first step in conquering strongholds is identifying their root causes. Often, what appears on the surface is just a symptom of a deeper issue. For example, habitual sins like lust or anger might stem from unmet needs, unresolved hurt, or incorrect beliefs about oneself or God. Reflective prayer, meditation on Scripture, and counsel from trusted spiritual mentors can help illuminate these underlying issues.

Strategies for Conquering Strongholds

1. Acknowledge and Repent: Acknowledgement is a key to freedom. Recognize the stronghold and its impact on your life, and repent for giving it a foothold. This step is crucial for breaking the cycle of sin and opening up to God’s transformative work.

2. Renew Your Mind: Romans 12:2 emphasizes the importance of mind renewal in spiritual transformation. Regularly immerse yourself in Scripture to replace the lies and deceptions that strongholds use to maintain control with the truth of God’s Word.

3. Engage in Prayer and Fasting: Prayer and fasting are powerful spiritual disciplines that focus one’s spiritual energy and invoke divine intervention. They are particularly effective in matters of spiritual warfare, helping to weaken the grip of strongholds by enhancing spiritual sensitivity and dependence on God.

4. Seek Deliverance: In cases where strongholds have a demonic component, seeking a deliverance ministry can be necessary. These ministries are equipped to handle such spiritual battles with authority and confidentiality.

5. Build Accountability: Establish relationships with other believers who can offer prayer, support, and accountability. The Christian journey is not meant to be walked alone, and having others to help you in your fight against strongholds can be incredibly beneficial.

6. Practice Spiritual Disciplines: Regular practice of spiritual disciplines such as worship, service, and communion helps strengthen the spirit and weaken the hold of sinful patterns. They reorient the believer’s focus towards God and away from the snares of the stronghold.

Living in Victory

Conquering strongholds is not typically a one-time event but a journey. It involves daily decisions to live out the truth in God’s Word and rely on His power. Ephesians 6:10-18 provides the armor of God as a metaphorical representation of the spiritual defenses one should employ daily.

Strongholds can be tenacious, but they are not invincible. With God’s help and the right strategies, you can conquer these spiritual barriers. Identifying the root causes of strongholds and applying biblical principles to address these issues is the path to true freedom and effectiveness in one’s faith journey. As believers engage in this process, they not only experience personal liberation but also contribute to the spiritual health and vitality of their communities.
