Impact Family Christian Counseling: Addiction Recovery Journey
Welcome to your year of transformation. At Impact Family, we view addiction not merely as a disease to be managed, but as a “life-dominating sin” or “modern idolatry” that Jesus Christ can set you completely free from. This journey is structured into four quarters, each 11 weeks long, with a two-week Sabbath Break between quarters to rest, reflect, and reconnect with your family and church.
Our approach integrates the Biblical 12 Steps, understanding of God and reliance on His amazing grace and power with rigorous scientific and medical understanding of how addiction and healthy holistic lifestyle affects the brain, body, and soul.
Quarter 1: The Blueprint for Victory
Focus: Foundational Truths and the Biology of Addiction
Biblical Steps 1–3: Honesty, Hope, and Surrender.
This quarter moves you from the chaos of active addiction into a stable plan for victory. We examine the scientific “Bucket Analogy” to understand why your body feels it needs the addiction to survive.
- Weeks 1–3: Admitting Powerlessness. Recognizing that the “fear of man” and self-reliance lead to traps. We admit we are “in Adam”—naturally prone to sin and unable to save ourselves.
+2 - Weeks 4–6: The Science of the “Neurochemical Bucket.”
- The Brain: Understanding how dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins are flooded by addictive behaviors, causing the brain to shut down its natural production.
- The Crash: Learning why you feel “depleted” and depressed when the addiction is removed, and why it takes 1–2 years for the brain to physically heal.
- Weeks 7–9: The Cycle of Temptation. Breaking down how a thought becomes an act of sin.
- Weeks 10–11: Establishing Daily Devotion. Implementing the ACTS model (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) to begin rewiring your mind.
Sabbath Break (2 Weeks): Reflect on Step 3—Turning your will and life over to the care of God.
Quarter 2: Internal Restoration
Focus: The Mind, the Body, and the New Nature
Biblical Steps 4–6: Inventory, Confession, and Character Building.
True restoration requires moving beyond “behavior modification” to “heart transformation”.
- Weeks 1–3: The Moral Inventory. Taking an honest look at the heart. We don’t blame circumstances; we own our choices.
- Weeks 4–6: Medical Dangers of Addiction.
- The Body: How “surfeiting” (excess) destroys the “Temple of God”. We examine the specific damage caused by substances and compulsive behaviors on the nervous system and physical health.
- The Heart: Recognizing that unconfessed sin causes physical and spiritual “leanness”.
- Weeks 7–9: The “Put Off and Put On” Method. Replacing the “Old Man” (destructive habits) with the “New Man” (godly habits).
- Weeks 10–11: A New Way of Thinking. Disciplining the mind to “seek things above” rather than a “temporary fix”.
Sabbath Break (2 Weeks): Step 6 Reflection: Preparing for God to remove defects of character.
Quarter 3: Healing Relationships & Spiritual Warfare
Focus: Forgiveness and the Invisible Battle
Biblical Steps 7–9: Humility, Amends, and Reconciliation.
Addiction destroys relationships. Quarter 3 focuses on the “Horizontal” work of making things right with people and the “Vertical” battle against the enemy.
- Weeks 1–3: Vertical Forgiveness. Humbling ourselves before God to receive His mercy.
- Weeks 4–6: Making Amends. The “Great Challenge”: Forgiving those who encouraged your addiction and seeking restoration for the marriages and families you have affected.
- Weeks 7–9: Tactics of the Enemy. Learning that Satan uses Doubt, Guilt, and Unforgiveness to keep you in bondage.
- Weeks 10–11: The Armor of God. Using the “Sword of the Spirit” (Scripture) to rebuke the fiery darts of temptation.
Sabbath Break (2 Weeks): Step 9 Reflection: Rebuilding the bridge to your family and church.
Quarter 4: Living the Spirit-Filled Life
Focus: Maturity, Self-Control, and Ministry
Biblical Steps 10–12: Maintenance, Prayer, and Service.
The final quarter equips you to stay free forever. You transition from a “recovering addict” to a “disciple of Christ”.
- Weeks 1–3: Constant Inventory. Practicing Step 10: “Watching and praying” so you don’t re-enter the cycle of sin.
- Weeks 4–6: Mastery and Self-Control.
- Zero Tolerance: Implementing practical “blocks” (Internet filters, avoiding bars, ending toxic associations) because the flesh is weak.
- Scientific Awareness: Staying vigilant during the 1–2 year window of neurochemical recovery.
- Weeks 7–9: The Fruit of the Spirit. Seeing the spontaneous growth of love, joy, and peace as you “abide in the Vine”.
- Weeks 10–11: To Equip and Edify. Step 12: Sharing your testimony to pull others “out of the fire”. You are now equipped for the ministry God has called you to.
The Impact Goal
By the end of this journey, you will realize that you are not a “hopeless addict” forever. You are a new creation. You have been given the scientific tools to understand your body and the spiritual power to rule over it; well as the assurance of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
