This was Max Lucado at age 50. From the outside, his ministry was thriving and all cylinders were firing. But inwardly, he was battling atrial fibrillation, navigating a fractured church staff, and suffocating under the immense weight of pastoral burnout.

The untruth whispers, “I must handle this alone, or I will lose my calling.” Believing this lie, it becomes easier to hide in a parking lot, masking the pain behind closed doors, believing that God’s grace applies to the congregation, but not to the one standing behind the pulpit.
Redemption: The Light of Confession
The turning point for Max Lucado came when the Holy Spirit mercifully pierced his isolation. Sitting in his car with his hidden beverage, God spoke directly to his heart, asking why—if he truly had everything together—was he hiding in a parking lot with a beer concealed in a paper bag?
Redemption begins the moment we step out of the darkness and into the light. The blood of Jesus is sufficient for the exhausted pastor just as much as it is for the prodigal. Healing doesn’t come from just “managing” the addiction; it comes from true repentance, bringing our secret sins to the elders, and allowing God to radically renew our minds.
To walk in this freedom, we must actively put on the “helmet of salvation,” trusting God to protect our minds from the spiraling, toxic thoughts that drive us to numb out. We have to practice what Lucado calls “picky thinking”—just because a stressful thought enters your mind doesn’t mean you have to entertain it. Through Christ, we have the authority to take every thought captive.
Restoration: Biblical Sufficiency and Deep Healing
