Paul Washer, The Gospel. The most terrifying truth of Scripture

Filmed at the Sermon Index conference, Paul Washer sat down and explained in wonderful detail the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Please share this video with everyone you know.

Within the pages of the Bible lies a truth so profound, so transformative, that it has the power to shake the very foundations of our existence. This truth is encapsulated in the Gospel—the message of God’s redemptive love, mercy, and grace revealed through Jesus Christ. While the Gospel is often celebrated as a message of hope and salvation, it also confronts us with the most terrifying truth of Scripture—a truth that demands a response and challenges us to reckon with the reality of our own brokenness and need for redemption.

The Gospel Message

At its core, the Gospel is the proclamation of God’s love and mercy extended to humanity through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the good news that, despite our sin and rebellion, God has made a way for us to be reconciled to Him and experience eternal life through faith in Jesus.

The terrifying truth of the Gospel lies in its revelation of the depth of human sinfulness and the severity of God’s judgment against sin. Scripture tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) and that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). This means that every person is guilty before God and deserving of His righteous judgment.

Facing the Reality of Sin

Confronting the truth of our own sinfulness can be a terrifying and humbling experience. It forces us to acknowledge the ways in which we have fallen short of God’s standard of holiness and righteousness. It reveals the darkness and brokenness that lurk within our hearts—the selfishness, pride, greed, and hatred that separate us from God and one another.

The Gospel does not shy away from this reality; instead, it shines a light into the darkest corners of our souls and exposes the depth of our need for salvation. It reveals the terrifying consequences of sin and the urgency of turning away from our rebellion and returning to God in repentance.

The truth about the gospel

The Cross as the Ultimate Revelation

Yet, even as the Gospel confronts us with the terrifying truth of our sinfulness, it also points us to the ultimate revelation of God’s love and mercy—the cross of Jesus Christ. On the cross, Jesus bore the full weight of our sin and suffered the punishment that we deserved. He willingly laid down His life as a sacrifice for our sins, demonstrating the depth of God’s love and the extent of His grace.

The cross stands as a stark reminder of the cost of our redemption and the lengths to which God was willing to go to reconcile us to Himself. It is at the cross that we encounter the most terrifying truth of Scripture—that our sinfulness required nothing less than the death of the Son of God.

Responding to the Gospel: In light of the terrifying truth of the Gospel, we are faced with a choice—to accept or reject the offer of salvation extended to us through Jesus Christ. We can continue to cling to our sin and rebellion, ignoring the consequences of our actions and rejecting God’s offer of forgiveness. Or we can humbly acknowledge our need for salvation, repent of our sins, and place our faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior.

Conclusion

The Gospel confronts us with the most terrifying truth of Scripture—the reality of our sinfulness and the severity of God’s judgment against sin. Yet, it also reveals the depth of God’s love and mercy, demonstrated through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. As we wrestle with the implications of the Gospel, may we humbly embrace the offer of salvation extended to us and live in the light of God’s grace and forgiveness.
